New R&A Principal Shawn Gehle Brings Proven Record of Success
Gehle-Run Architecture Studio Merges with R&A Architecture + Design
CULVER CITY, CA:  R&A Architecture + Design welcomes Principal Shawn Gehle, to the Culver City-based firm.  Gehle contributes to R&A’s rapid growth by bringing members of his former studio to the firm, which now has more than 30 staff members—up from five at its inception in 2012.
Founding Principals Christian Robert, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, and Benjamin Anderson, Assoc. AIA, welcome Gehle, along with his 18 years of expertise and track record of success specializing in projects that include creative workplace, educational institutions and large-scale commercial developments.  Gehle’s status as an industry thought leader was acknowledged in January 2016 when he was appointed to the Board of Directors of A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles.
“From the beginning, our goal has been to build a fearless, innovative, and curious practice that transforms existing typologies and addresses our current challenges as a society, while working with like-minded partners and clients,” says Robert.  “Shawn is exceptionally talented, and he brings a fresh and exciting perspective to what we’ve started.”
Gehle most recently served as the Principal of the Los Angeles design studio he founded for Kansas City, Missouri-based BNIM Architects before announcing he would be leaving the firm in February.  He also sat on the firm’s Executive Committee, driving the acceleration of applied research, design prowess, and business performance across the multi-office practice.  Before his tenure at BNIM, Gehle worked at Gensler Los Angeles for almost a decade, which is where he met and worked closely with both Robert and Anderson.  While at Gensler, he became a Design Principal/Studio Director and also served as Global Design Realization Leader, advising Gensler’s Board of Directors on issues related to design and delivery.  “Shawn, Christian, and I have a history of working together that goes back 10 years,” says Anderson.  “Early on, we realized a shared vision for what a young and energetic practice can accomplish by leveraging deep expertise from a globally sourced common background with more nimble, rigorous creative explorations.”
Gehle earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kansas State University, Manhattan, in 1999.  He was a Visiting Professor at both the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and at his alma mater, between 2003 and 2005.  From 2011 to 2013, Gehle was an Instructor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
“Working collaboratively with Christian and Benjamin again will enlarge our shared commitment to design excellence and drive what is possible,” says Gehle.  “Our next step allows us to deliver on our collective talents in a bold way.”
This announcement follows several initiatives the company has taken recently to strengthen its industry leadership, reach new clients, and drive the firm’s continued growth.  In 2016, R&A added Alex Anamos, AIA, LEED AP—formerly of LOHA and KAA Design—as Studio Director, and Brooks T. Atwood, IDSA, IIDA, who has achieved national recognition as a design thought leader, as Director of Design.
R&A Architecture + Design is a young, energetic architecture and design firm focused on creative solutions in multiple scales and typologies, including commercial, hospitality, residential, and mixed-use.  With two offices—Culver City, CA, and Portland, OR—R&A transforms local communities through creative solutions.  The firm embraces intensive research to deliver fresh, new thinking at every point of the design process.  It values how curiosity feeds creativity, and how creative approaches yield innovative answers.  Founded in 2012 by two award-winning Principals, Christian Robert, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, and Benjamin Anderson, Assoc. AIA, and joined by Principal Shawn Gehle, R&A globally leverages a broad portfolio of experience in transformative architecture and interiors projects.

LOS ANGELES: R&A Architecture + Design announces that Brooks T. Atwood, IDSA, IIDA, has joined the firm as Director of Design.  Atwood is an award-winning designer and educator who has attained international success in the fields of architecture, industrial design, and interior environments.  His cutting-edge designs have earned him the distinction of being named one of six emerging designers in 2013 by the Museum of Arts and Design, New York City.  His popular TEDx talks include “Collaborative Opportunities are Everywhere” and “Design Like You Mean It!”
“Brooks will push our work in new directions,” says R&A Architecture + Design principal and founder Christian Robert, AIA, IIDA, NCARB, LEED AP.  “He believes collaboration with different disciplines and cultures is essential to innovation, and his process-based approach will help keep our practice on track to expand to more experimental and diverse types of projects.”

“Los Angeles is a city ripe with possibilities,” says Atwood of his move to the West Coast.  “The design communities here are open to experimentation and innovation to serve ideas and purpose—not merely for their own sakes.”
As a professor at The New School’s Parsons School of Design and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Atwood led collaborative teams that brought together technologies, designers, and business leaders into a common space of possibility.  At NJIT, he served as assistant director of the Idea Factory, a think-tank for developing innovative approaches to healthy buildings, medical devices, materials, and products.  Atwood’s own designs for chairs, lighting, and cutlery have won numerous awards, and his Ripple Mirror for is now sold at the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
His early collaborative work—bridging advanced computation with traditional visual art—is represented in the permanent collection at the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, Korea, as well as by exhibitions in Berlin, Milan, New York City, and Seoul.
Atwood received a Master of Science degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in 2003.  He was valedictorian at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1999.  While at IIT, he spend a year studying at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts via L’Ecole de L’Architecture Paris Val de Seine.  Before starting his own firm, Atwood worked for architecture firms in New York and Chicago on projects ranging from high-rise residential and hospitality buildings to designs for McDonald’s restaurants.
